Drainage Design for Arid-Region Cities: A Practical Guide
A technical primer on stormwater management systems for cities where rainfall is rare but intense — with lessons from Jigjiga's recent municipal drainage project.
Designing drainage systems for arid regions presents unique challenges that conventional temperate-climate approaches fail to address. In cities like Jigjiga, where annual rainfall averages just 550mm but arrives in intense, concentrated bursts during the Gu and Deyr seasons, the consequences of inadequate drainage are severe: flash flooding, road damage, and groundwater contamination.
The Jigjiga Challenge
The 2023 Jigjiga Municipal Drainage Rehabilitation Project provided valuable data on the performance of different drainage approaches in our regional context. The project covered 12km of primary drainage channels and 34km of secondary collectors across six kebeles.
Key Design Principles
- Peak flow design: Use the 25-year return period storm (not 10-year) as the baseline for primary channels, given the increasing intensity of rainfall events
- Sediment management: Incorporate settlement basins at 500m intervals — sediment loads in Jigjiga are 3-5x higher than temperate city assumptions
- Dual-purpose channels: Design open channels that serve as pedestrian paths during dry seasons, maximizing land use value
- Groundwater protection: Line channels in areas overlying shallow aquifers to prevent contamination from surface runoff
Performance Data
Six months post-completion, the rehabilitated system has handled three major rainfall events with zero road flooding — compared to 14 flood incidents in the same corridors during the previous Gu season. Estimated damage prevention: 8.5 million ETB.
